The British isles are the single largest contributors to the International English Music scene. You name a famous group, band or singer – and the chances are that they are from Britain. Deep Purple is one such band.
Deep Purple is an English rock band formed in Hertford in 1968. They are amongst the pioneers of heavy metal and modern hard rock. Deep Purple, together with Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, have been referred to as the “Unholy Trinity of British Hard Rock and Heavy Metal in the early to mid-Seventies”. They were listed in the 1975 Guinness Book of World Records as “The Globe’s Loudest Band” for a 1972 concert at London’s Rainbow Theatre. Deep Purple have sold over 100 million albums worldwide, including 7.5 million certified units in the US.
The members of Deep Purple have changed many times. However, their most commercially successful line-up featured Ian Gillan (vocals), Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Jon Lord (organ), Roger Glover (bass), and Ian Paice (drums).
As we all know that till the early 1990s, International music releases would happen in India, many many years after they have been released abroad. I purchased my 1st rock album in the late 1970s ~~~ Deep Purple’s Machine Head, at a very “princely” price of Rs. 150/-. And for the “record”, Machine Head by Deep Purple was officially released in March 1972.
Machine Head is an iconic album, a trail blazer of its times. It was one of the major influences in the early development of the heavy metal music genre. Commercially, it was Deep Purple’s most successful album, topping the charts in several countries following its release. The album reached number 1 in the United Kingdom and stayed in the top 40 for 20 weeks. It reached number 7 in the United States, remaining on the Billboard 200 for 118 weeks.
The Original vinyl release contained the following Tracks.
Side One
1. Highway Star
2. Maybe I’m a Leo
3. Pictures of Home
4. Never Before
Side Two
5. Smoke on the Water
6. Lazy
